In 2014, I began teaching students privately. I taught multiple students of different ages, with a range from early childhood to late adulthood. Most of my students were beginners, and we worked together for over a year. By the end of our time together, they were able to play fairly advanced music for the time they had been playing, such as "La Folia" by Corelli and "Jesu, the Joy of Man's Desiring" by Bach. For younger students who are beginning, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. This book has great materials for setting up the violin and bow hold, reading notes, rhythm and other musical markings, and introducing basic music theory such as time and key signatures. Also, this book incorporates the foundation of all musical learning, scales and arpeggios, into fun exercises that are enjoyable for every student. For older students who have more experience, I have a range of etudes from Sevcik to Kreutzer that can futher develop and solidify a good foundation of technique. For musical training, I use solo repertoire from Suzuki and other sources that are appropriate for each student's level so that he/she can be healthily challenged musically and technically while feeling accomplished during performances. I have been teaching privately part time for the past 4 years working with students in grades K-12. My main goal in lessons is for my students to not only succeed at a new skill once, but to be confident in their ability to repeat their success in practice at home and at our next lessons. I encourage positive feedback and positive "self-talk" as a means of boosting self-efficacy. I think an important part of learning is goal setting and outlining specific, achievable steps to reach that goal so that progress can be tracked and the process of learning can become less ambiguous. In order to enjoy playing our instruments for many years to come, I emphasize the importance of healthy technique in order to prevent injury. Through the process of learning scales and pieces, I make sure to incorporate a focus on correct posture, a relaxed left hand, and healthy bow arm so that playing the violin is a positive experience for each student. I use a wide range of materials depending on a student's interests and background - I often teach music reading to students who are reading for the first time, and for students who are already able to read music I modify our lesson materials to reflect this. I'm a lifelong musician and grew up playing piano with my grandparents, who are both concert pianists and taught me how to play. I have my A.A. in music from Mt. San Jacinto C.C. and have studied under a number of great professional artists. I have been in a ZZ Top and Led Zeppelin tribute band, as well as a 00's and 10's rock cover band. I've participated in a number of students bands and accompanied violinists and singers during recitals and events. Read More

To my surprise, everyone, including that 6 year old, had a clear answer. All of them were different reasons and goals. I started writing notes at the end of each lesson on what a student had specifically struggled with, mastered, showed signs of improvement since the previous lesson, what exercises were draining on them, and what exercises they resonated with. I also took note of their mood and energy at the beginning of the lesson compared to the end. Read More

Teaching Violin: Tips for New Teachers

...use an extra pair of violins). And sometimes, your old instructors can have some spot-on advice. There’s nothing a teacher likes better than to see his pupils succeed, even as adults. When you face confusions in the teaching world, discuss them with musicians you trust. They want to help you. Remember also that there are training programs that can help you refresh your outlook on teaching violin. For example, in the Suzuki method, there are a variety of summer institutes that offer lectures and observations focused on specific books of the repertoire. You might find a mid-year workshop, where you could do some observations ... Read More

Music Lessons for Kids: How Young is Too Young?

...Imagine this scenario: you’re the parent of a curious five-year-old child (we’ll name the child “Julie”) who can sing her favorite song on the radio in key by memory. After recognizing Julie’s growing love for music, you buy her a keyboard to play that she loves to bang around on for what seems like hours every day, creating new and wonderful songs for all to enjoy. Her enthusiasm for music by this point seems unquenchable. Finally, the thought manifests in your mind—Julie may be exhibiting some musical talent. Maybe it’s time to sign her up for some music lessons for kids.     Few situations are more ... Read More

How To Find The Motivation To Practice

...practice for a week or two? If you are new to learning an instrument, you have to start seeing things in the long term. Being busy and skipping practice for a week or two isn’t ideal, but it’s much better than quitting forever. It reminds me of people who try the whole New Year’s resolution thing. It’s great to set out with lofty goals and aspirations, but you will inevitably face challenges and fail sometimes. What you do with failure says everything about you and what you truly care about. Skipping a few practices is totally fine. Just remember to get back on track. ... Read More
