Back when I was in Venezuela, I was playing in my city's orchestra the entire time from 2002 to 2018. In that orchestra, which is a part of the renowned "El Sistema". El Sistema is a system that helps underserved communities get the music knowledge they would otherwise not be able to get. We had different levels of orchestras, from beginners to advanced. I teach the basics first. I show my student how to hold the bow and the violin in detail. I explain that it will be awkward to hold the bow in correct position because it is unusual for person to hold the right hand that way. Modeling effective practice techniques is high priority during lesson time so that students can make progress at their own pace outside of lesson time as well as in lesson time. To this end, I also provide students with a list of goals and reminders to aid practice between lessons.
