I am a trained educator with a Master's degree in Music Education, licensed by State of New Jersey Department of Education. I completed advanced Violin studies and chamber music coaching at a number of institutions including Music Mountain, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Mannes College of Music, Dartmouth and Vassar Colleges. I currently perform in a number of orchestras in the Metro New York area. I am a violinist with the baroque recorder ensemble, Musica Dolce, of the Highland Park Recorder Society. I teach from beginning to advanced level students, ages 6 to adult.

Kathleen S

Instruments:

Music has played a vital, formative role in my life for as long as I can remember. My parents are both excellent musicians.  I started piano lessons at the age of 5 and began studying violin when I was nine. Although I am classically trained and have extensive orchestral experience as a violinist and violist, I was a founding member of an Irish group and several early music ensembles, performed with folk and classical guitarists, and played in a rock and roll nightclub band. I continue to play in many churches and synagogues, do strolling violin work, perform jazz standards, and act as lead violin in an internationally acclaimed big band. I am flexible as a player and teacher and love all types of music. I see music as a wonderful means of communication and a gift to be shared!

Instruments:

I love the violin, and enjoy sharing this love with you all. I have been playing the violin for 20 years and have studied with Sally Thomas, Elmar Oliveira, and Stephen Majeske. In 2013, I graduated from Mannes Colege of Music in New York, with a Masters of Music degree in violin and Chamber Music. Over the years I have had the opportunity to play at Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as Benidict Music Tent in Aspen Music Festival. I have had the great privilege to work with prominent conductors such as David Robertson, Gunthur Schuller, Robert Spano, David Zinman, and Hugh Wolff. I have been a mentor-fellow at Aspen Music Festival. During my time at Mannes, I served as concertmaster of the Repertory Orchestra and Mace Ensemble under Lowell Liebermann, under whom we gave the the New York Premiere of Paul Moravec's "Capital Unknowns". I have had the great honor to perform Tchaikovsky's sextet "Souvenir de Florence" with violinist James Ehnes in a special gala concert in New York.

Aziza M

Instruments:

I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan where I began studying piano at the age of five with Professor Tamara Papovich and began playing violin at age six with Professor Gulnara Suleymanova. I began my undergraduate degree at the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan in 2004 and graduated in 2008. I moved to the United States in 2010 to pursue my Professional Performance Certificate at Lynn University, Florida with Professor Carol Cole. Also, starting from the age of sixteen, I began violin coaching to students from all levels. After teaching for some years, I realized that I am very passionate about sharing my skills and knowledge with my students and it motivates me immensely to see them grow in the field of music. With over 10 years of teaching experience, my style of coaching has been often seen by my students as creative and effective.

Instruments:

Music communicates what words cannot.  My teaching philosophy is based on an open dialogue, creating a comfortable, fun, and curious learning environment.  As an active soloist and orchestral musician, I have appeared with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Brockton Symphony and Quincy Symphony Orchestras, and enjoy frequent appearances with the Lowell and Waltham Philharmonic Orchestras and such esteemed ensembles as the Poisson Rouge Ensemble, New York Classical Players, and most recently, the Moirae Ensemble.  I was Concertmaster of The Juilliard Orchestra, as well as a member of Solisti Ensemble, New York Classical Players, and the critically acclaimed Axiom Ensemble. I graduated from The Juilliard School with a Bachelor and Masters Degrees as a student of Glenn Dicterow and Joel Smirnoff.

More Information About Violin Lessons

As a student starts lessons they will need to provide their own instrument. While advanced students may choose to buy a violin, it is a good idea for beginners to look into rental programs. By renting, you are able to commit less financially, and you will be equipped with all the accessories you need. Renting also benefits children, as string instruments come in different sizes, and a child will most likely start on a small instrument. As the grow, they will need to increase the instruments size, and this switch can be done very conveniently if you are renting.
Musika offers customized one-on-one music lessons at your home - a time saving solution for busy parents and students. The convenience of in-home lessons allows you to save time without having to transport your child to class, allows your child to maximize their busy schedule, and provides a safe and familiar environment in which to learn.
Music lessons are tailored to the students specific needs. The teacher will work with each student individually to develope a lesson plan that ensures the most productivity. While working towards the students specific goals, there will be lessons in music theory, how to correctly handle the instrument, and how to develope the students own musicianship. While Musika does not mandate a particular style of teaching, if there is a method you are interested in we will do our best to match you with a teacher that specializes in that area.
We love adult students! We have adults who are complete beginners, some who haven't played their instrument in 10 years, and some who are more advanced students looking to take their skills to the next level. Our teachers have proven methods to get you the results you desire.
Our earliest recommended starting age for violin is 4, although exceptions can certainly be made for a younger student who is capable of handling the strings properly and who has sufficient strength in the fingers and hands. A teacher can help you decide which size instrument to choose depending on the age and height of your child.
