ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BME with emphasis on classical guitar performance, Weber State University, K-12 certification

Awards:

2014-Jane Morrin Scholarship

Overview:
I believe anyone has the ability to learn music. I feel it is my duty to help my students discover their own musical path. It is my passion to show you, you have the ability to overcome any obstacles you may face in music. On May 1st I graduated from Weber State University with my Bachelors in K-12 Music Education. I got the chance to be instructed by great minds like Viktor Uzur (known worldwide for the Richter/Uzur Duo) and work along side talented students like Fan Ya Lin (pianist with a professorship at Julliard). This upcoming fall I will be attending the School of Music of University of Washington to get my masters in composition.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience varies for each of the instruments I instruct. I began teaching private lessons for guitar in 2004. My voice instruction began in 2009, and the rest of the listed instruments I began to teach in 2012. I believe consistent daily practice is essential for improvement in my students, and encourage my students to log their practice time. In the words of my professor Todd Woodbury, "You do not become a master from what you do within these lessons. You become great by how much effort you put into the application of my guidance through your own practice." I cannot make you the performer you want to be. I can only guide you through the process. This is why I am always excited to bring on a new student. Each student I have worked with holds a special place with me. I strive for those key moments when my student comes to a new musical understanding.
METHODS USED
My motto is my students create their own lesson. I formulate lesson plans off of the styles of music you are most interested in. If my student has a more "just for fun" attitude, the lesson will inevitably be a more light hearted feel. If the student would like to focus on more technicalities, that as well is a different approach. However, I do have a more structured plan for younger students. This being said, all of my students should expect to learn proper exercises and scales to move along progress. All students will learn basics of music theory as well as musicality. I choose appropriate repertoire and/or allow my students to choose to meet their own goals.  I also drive my students to experiment with improv as well as create their own music.
LESSON STYLE
I feel each of my students are unique. I love watching my students' level of musical understanding progress. I love seeing the dedication and determination begin to heighten as the lessons progress. Within each lesson I point out areas that need to be worked on as well as areas of improvement. Seeing one's progress is the most important element to me for my students. Therefore, I like to record my students quarterly for a few minutes within a lesson to show the mass amounts of improvement they will accomplish.  It will be my pleasure to work with you. *SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO MISS ALLIE ON PIANO! Allie has shown an exceeding amount of progress with each lesson. I am proud to call her my student. She is always prepared, and eager to show me her progress for the week. I am delightfully pleased to see how well she has applied our preceding lesson to her week's practice. Allie is quick to fix a mistake. She takes direction well and is not afraid to take a risk within the realm of musicality. "I'm super proud of you, Allie. Your scales are coming along so well. Your dedication is admirable, and I feel you have what it takes to continuously take your practice to the next level. Keep it up miss metronome!" ;)

Yolandi is equal parts fun and strict in her approach to teaching music. She places huge importance to dedication and precision without making learning seem like a herculean task. I truly enjoyed my vocal training with her. :)

Yolandi is an excellent example of versatility in a teacher. She is able to customize her lessons with the ability of the student. My daughter is always excited to have her lessons to show Yolandi how she has progressed during the week. Yolandi's ability to relate to a "tween" and her patience and encouraging nature are the perfect push that my daughter needs.
