My name is Tina Chapkinyan. I am a violin teacher for beginner and advanced students. I also teach beginner piano. I have over thirty years of experience teaching classical music, which is the base of all musical styles. My teaching style, which I have developed through experience and continuous musical education, is based on my formal Russian musical education. I always get to know each and every one of my students on individual basis and develop personalized curriculum based on his or her character, goals and ambitions. I am an active member of Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC). My students take the Certificate of Merit (CM) test annually in performance, theory, sight-reading and ear training. Taking the CM test is optional but highly recommended. I also make sure my students have plenty of chances at performing on stage at recitals by organizing my own recitals or joining forces with other MTAC teachers. Having a recital to practice for is a great motivation for students to practice daily and gives the parents the chance to see their children's accomplishments.
As a teacher I am patient and considerate. My first priority with beginner students is developing correct posture and relaxed position of hands. This is of most importance since it is difficult to change posture later on and bad posture can affect not only the quality of musical performance, but the health of the student as well. I teach reading music from the very start; thus, as soon as a child can read the letters and numbers, he or she is ready to start reading music too.

I always make sure my students and their parents have realistic expectations when they start taking music lessons. For instance, violin is a difficult instrument to play and it can take months of practice to play a simple tune. However, it can be fun and enjoyable as long as it is understood that these simple accomplishments in playing the violin are in fact rather big ones. I request the parents of young (5-7 years old) students to be present during the lesson as often as possible. This helps the parents assist their child in daily practice sessions outside of class.
