Overview:
As a graduate from Vanguard University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance with an emphasis on composition, I have been exposed to all aspects of guitar playing and writing. I have performed, recorded and toured nationally with the Vanguard Guitar Ensemble and Quartet. My experience with Vanguard University has allowed me to grow in maturity not only musically but also in my passion to play and teach people music.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught guitar for about 8 years to people of all ages. I have found that people who want to play guitar and who are serious about it benefit from learning both the classical and modern music world. The reason is that classical music offers a platform on which a student may learn the basics of music theory. As far as my teaching and tutoring experience goes, I have enjoyed tutoring children in Math and English at Burnett and Lafayette Elementary throughout the years. As an undergraduate, I minored in mathematics because I enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction of solving difficult questions. As a composer, I find that mathematics and composing go hand in hand. Aside from teaching guitar, I have taught people in ear training and music theory. I am comfortable teaching people of all ages because I believe that learning is continuous throughout all of our lives.
METHODS USED
For beginner students, I would start them off by getting them acquainted with the instrument. I would like to know what music drives them. From there I would chose either a Hal Leonard Acoustic Guitar lesson book or Frederick Noad Solo Guitar, one that focuses on classical guitar.
LESSON STYLE
In a lesson situation, I am pleased to see my students learn something new every time. I encourage my students to record the lesson so that they can review it throughout the week. I feel that setting realistic goals helps the student in feeling accomplished. I am a patient instructor that understands that not everyone learns at the same pace. I am willing to work with anyone that has the desire to learn and it will be my job to keep that desire going.
