Overview:
Hello, thank you for viewing my profile. I see myself as a lifelong student and believe knowledge and skills should be nurtured and passed on and get a great sense of accomplishment from teaching. I am a recent graduate from Arizona State University having earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance studying the classical guitar. Prior to that I was a self-taught electric player playing at local churches and playing with local bands before beginning a formal education.
EXPERIENCE
I have always been a bit of a sponge and in my own early days as a self taught guitarist I would try and soak up everything I can. My first students were actually early band-mates and other musicians that I would jam with. I occasionally some private studios but currently teach out of my home studio which is both convenient for me and my students as I have all my materials, instruments, books I have acquired over the years easily available.
METHODS USED
Beginning as a self-taught guitarist has made me aware of some of the pitfalls misinformation, misconceptions that exist in learning guitar. I’m also well practiced at correcting improper technique having to do it myself numerous times as I became more educated. I like to imagine myself going back in time to when I was younger and teaching a young me from scratch, and try and imagine exactally what I would teach and what happits I would make myself develop in an imaginary effor to make myself a better guitarist now.
LESSON STYLE
With young students, I allow myself to be a bit more comprehensive in that I can start from the very basics from the beginning and even come up with simple games with rhythm, basic ear training and reading notation. The big challenge with young players is the actual act of physically playing the guitar and I encourage parents to invest in a quality instrument that is easy to play. I try and get my older children and teenagers to try and play as early as possible to develop a passion for the instrument, but not before building an understanding of the basics. I may skip some of the basics in an effort to get them to impress their friends (an excellent motivator) but will keep track of their progress be mindful of returning for the detail work. Much like building a foundation and a frame before finishing a house.
