Overview:
I'm originally from Iowa where I grew up on a farm, eventually starting trombone in 3rd grade when my cousin gave me his old horn. After having a successful high school career I attended Iowa State University and earned a Bachelors of Music in trombone performance. Playing trombone has given me many wonderful opportunities in my life such as performing with the Boston Brass and Dallas Brass, performing in Europe three separate times, playing in the Southeast Trombone Symposium, and playing in many other bands, orchestras, and festivals. I currently play trombone in ensembles such as the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra, Bone Therapy, Music City Bones, Music City Brass Ensemble, Franklin Brass Quintet, and in other freelance performances throughout the Nashville area.
Even though trombone has always been my primary instrument I'm also very active playing bass guitar, playing in a wide variety of bands and genres ranging from hard rock to reggae. I believe that having an understanding and appreciation for other styles of music and instruments can help make a better musician, and learning a new instrument can be fun! Music has always been a very important foundation in my life and I'm always eager to share the power of music with others.
EXPERIENCE
I first started teaching during my sophomore year in college, teaching students how to prepare for the Iowa All-State Music Festival. I taught these students throughout my college years and saw many of them become successful trombone players, plus a few are now great band directors. Since I graduated college in 2013 I've been invited to be a brass clinician for multiple schools, a middle school solo contest judge, and as a musician in a wide variety of ensembles I work with fellow colleagues to create a memorable performance that audiences will enjoy.
METHODS USED
As a teacher I strive to give my students their best guide to success, knowing that every student has their own individual needs and ambitions. I like to start beginning students on Pearson's Standard of Excellence books and then broadening out to other methods after they get a good grasp of the basic elements of their instrument. More advanced players will be taught aspects of music theory and how to become more of a complete musician rather than just being a good player. My goal is to teach students the knowledge they need to grow as a person and a musician, so they can use the instrument to express their love for music!
LESSON STYLE
It's important to have fun while playing music and lessons shouldn't be an exception! During lessons I like to play duets and give small challenges, providing a interactive experience that encourages my students to enjoy the process of improving on their instrument. I expect my students to work hard while practicing and at lessons, though I understand every student learns differently and at a different pace. Ultimately it's the student's decision to become a better musician and I intend to do my best to lead the way.
