ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Master's of Music in Vocal Performance, Northwestern University Bachelor's of Music, Chicago School of the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University American Institute of Musical Studies (summer programs), Graz, Austria 1983, 1988

Overview:
I have been singing professionally for over 20 years in the opera world. I'm also very experienced in teaching all genres of music, not just classical. I also enjoy gardening. I have five students who will be singing at Carnegie Hall for the Festival of Fine Arts - three of them are students of mine from Musika! I have 2 students from Musika who are performance majors at Westminster. One in voice and one in piano this year. Last year a voice student of mine through Musika entered Manhattan School of Music.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching off and on since I was in college, and I have been teaching full-time for 12 years. I have been teaching with Musika since 2007. I started playing piano when I was five and picked up the cello at age 11. In high school, I sang in my church choir and often was given solos. I decided to major in singing in college. I received and Bachelor's in Music from Chicago School of the Performing arts which is connected with Roosevelt University. After that, I received a scholarship to attend Northwestern University and I received a Master's degree in voice performance. I went on to become an opera singer specializing in singing Wagner and Verdi.
METHODS USED
I use exercises from "How to Train Singers" by Larra Browning Henderson. I studied with her personally. I also studied with Margaret Harshaw. I continue to learn about singing through going to master classes taught by David Jones. My main focus is on vocal technique and healthy singing. I believe that the voice should be totally supported by the breath, without any tension in the throat. My exercises help the student to raise their soft palate and relax their larynx. my exercises also naturally bring the tongue forward in an "ng" position. I get amazing results from my students, which often times even surprise me.
LESSON STYLE
I spend half the lesson doing exercises, including breathing and humming. These help to develop the muscles for proper singing techniques. The singer is not singing fully at the start of the lessons, these exercises are like calisthenics for the muscles in the throat , tongue and soft palate. These have amazing results - students who begin without any singing voice can bloom using these. I enjoy seeing how each student develops. I never judge the potential of a student ahead of time because I've seen amazing results before that I never could have predicted.
