Overview:
In-demand NY session musician, teacher, and musical director Pete O has studied with many of the world’s top bass players. In addition to his independent studies at Berklee Music school, Pete has had the pleasure of studying with industry legends such as Victor Wooten, Chuck Rainey, Anthony Wellington, Adam Nitti, and Matt Garrison. Pete’s highlights include opening the Gathering of the Vibes festival in upstate New York, featuring James Brown, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Gov’t Mule, and the Allman Brothers. Pete has also held residencies in and around New York City over the last 10 years.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching in the areas of greater New York City and Long Island for the last 12 years. Making a student's musical aspirations has always been a great source of joy for me. Mainly, I focus on building a student's repertoire of his or her favorite music, so that practice can be a source of expression and actualization instead of obligation and drudgery. Once the student has started exploring their musical preferences, we can continue developing perfect technique, as well as practical improvisation and theory. For NYSSMA and Auditions, students will not only get the preparation they require, but also the poise and confidence to perform with excellence for their peers, adjudicators, etc. I often invite my more adventurous students to perform at shows in and around New York with me as well.
METHODS USED
Often I do use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books to get a student started reading, but try to shift to popular music as soon as possible to keep the repertoire interesting and relevant for the student, as well has their families and peers. As the student develops, students will learn to expand on these ideas with theory based improvisation to "make the song their own." For More Advanced students, we can work from the Real or Fake Books, or the Ireel App to increase improvisational experience and confidence.
LESSON STYLE
Many people remember music lessons in their youth as a time consuming source of frustration, built upon outdated music with no connection to the student's day to day life. This is why I like to divide lessons between fundamentals such as reading and theory, and apply those practices to the students' favorite songs. The greatest thing is to be able to see a student perform the music they love, so the real goal is for the student to build a repertoire of favorite songs to perform for family, friends, on-line or onstage.

I am in my 60s and decided to get back into playing my guitar. I thought taking lessons would be a good way to formalize the endeavor. I did have some concern about whether working with a teacher would work out as I've behave only played for my own enjoyment for a long time. Peter and I have had a few lessons together and I am truly enjoying the experience. He is very supportive and flexible. We arrived at a three gold approach that is really working for me. We focus on developing a playlist, learning some of the more iconic tunes from leading artist that I would have a hard time learning on my own and developing some technical skills related to style and music theory. Now I look forward to my next lesson and am already playing better and enjoying the journey. Peter is a great teacher I'm lucky to have the opportunity to work with him.

Pete is very patient and engaged Lucia right from the start. She is only 8 but really wants to play guitar. He teaches a popular song (based on what the child likes) to go along with the basic scales etc. a very good teacher!
