Overview:
I am a life-long musician who has studied classical music tirelessly from an early age. As a competitive pianist, I accomplished many dreams early in life and had retired from performing by age 18. I took every opportunity to perform - from accompanying the high school choir to performing at Carnegie Hall. Now, I find myself anxious to start teaching again as I can never really leave music behind.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to high school where I taught the younger siblings of my friends starting at age 15. When I went to college, I tutored freshman and sophomore piano majors to prepare them for jury (College competition evaluation at the end of sophomore year to determine if that student can continue in the music program). I continued to teach for the next 5 years until personal issues prevented me from dedicating the time required. I am ready to start teaching again as I miss teaching new students a great skill. A combination of classical music and modern music usually works best for the students that I encounter, but I am very flexible. Studying music should be fun and exciting - not a chore.
METHODS USED
For beginners, I prefer focusing on the fundamentals (scales, Hanon) in combination with beginner's lesson books such as Alfred's collections. As for adults, I tend to be goal oriented. What is the song you've always wanted to play? I then customize a syllabus based on that goal.
LESSON STYLE
It is very important that the student have a good time learning while achieving their goals. I love a student who is thirsty to learn more and more. I work with the student to keep reasonable goals from lesson to lesson. I emphasize practicing and focus and I am have different expectations for different students. Everyone is different so everyone gets a different approach based on their wants and needs.
