ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BA SUNY Fredonia, Music Education and Flute Performance MA Hartt School, Flute Performance
Overview:
I love teaching private lessons, and I have 12 years of experience doing so.  I have been playing flute for 26 years, and I earned my Bachelor's in Music Education and Flute Performance from SUNY Fredonia, and my Master's degree in Flute Performance from the Hartt School. I have performed with many different performers and ensembles including: the Chelsea Symphony, SEM Ensemble, Hartt Independent Chamber Orchestra, the Long Island flute ensemble, jazz bass legend, Nat Reeves, the Jalapeño Quartet, traditional Irish harpist Hailey Hewitt, guitarist Oren Fader, and the Alturas Duo.  I have performed at Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, for Composer's Voice Concert Series, the Connecticut Guitar Society, many public libraries, the Windsor Historical Society, the New Britain Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Windsor Art Center, and the Wadsworth Museum of Art, among others. In addition, I have performed in the pit for the musicals Once Upon a Mattress, Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes, Oklahoma, and Beauty and the Beast. I have also worked closely with many composers and has premiered new works by Nolan Stolz, Masatora Goya, Sean Pallatroni, Brendon Randall-Myers, and made the world premiere recording of the Delian Suite, from a body of international composers in the Delian Society. I have ecorded several works for Masatora Goya's album, Dream of Sailing. I recorded "Latinos Ni de Aqui Ni de Alla" on the Latin Heartbeat Orchestra album, El Regreso.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private lessons in 2005, and I have a variety of teaching experiences. I have since substitute taught every kind of subject, and I've taught general music K-5.  I have mentored conservatory level students when I was in grad school, I taught flute to non-flute music education majors, and I've taught undergraduate students that were pre-music.  I taught 3-8 year olds music at Laurel Hill Summer Camp in East Setauket, Long Island. I've also taught workshops on South American Folk Music with Alturs Duo, as well as flute masterclasses.
METHODS USED
Students learn best in a relaxed, nurturing environment.  I believe in order to successfully teach, I need to be encouraging, and truly care about the students.  My goal is to always have the students improve.  To do this, I think students need a well-balanced diet of tone (Moyse De la Senorite can be used), technique (scales for younger students, Maquarre Daily Excercises or Taffanel and Gaubert Daily Excercises for more advanced students), etudes (Melodious and Progressive Studies), and pieces (I consult the NYSSMA manual for appropriate pieces for the students level).  Having taken Alexander Technique, I strongly emphasize posture so that students can use their bodies in the most efficient way.  Individualized instruction allows for teachers to cater to the needs of the student, challenging the students without frustrating them.  Everyone is unique and learns at different rates, so no two lessons will ever be the same.  I teach students how to practice, so that they can progress outside of the 30 min. or hour long lesson.  As for performance standards, I have used rubrics for tone, technique, articulation, phrasing, and breathing.  Once strengths and weaknesses are assed, I create a plan to help the student improve, which is what students and teachers want to hear.
LESSON STYLE
I always emphasize musicality in my teaching, because if as performers, we are focusing on being expressive, we'll convey our love of music! If a student can think about what the music is expressing, they will be more motivated to keep practicing.  I focus on the fundamentals such as tone, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, basic music theory and history. I always give specific positive feedback, along with a tip for improvement. Finally, I always go over how, how much, and what to practice in lessons, so the student can learn what to listen for and focus on outside of the lesson, and keep improving during the week.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
