ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
B.M. in Jazz Composition and Arranging from the Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts Classical Percussion Performance Studies and Music Education Studies at the Boston Conservatory of Music, Boston, Massachusetts
Awards:

1986 - present: My work as a drummer/percussionist includes recordings with various artists on the Sony Japan, RCA Victor, Toshiba EMI and PonyCanyon labels.

Overview:
I'm a passionate and dedicated music educator with 30+ years experience in teaching drums and percussion in the U.S. and abroad. In 1984, I graduated from the Berklee College of Music and since then, I’ve toured the U.S., Asia, South America, Africa and the Middle East with many popular artists, in my capacity as a drummer and Latin percussionist. I have been a music educator and performing musician in the south Florida area since 2008.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started in the late 70’s, as I began teaching private lessons in drums at a young age. Since then I have been working with students in music schools and lesson studios around the world including Japan and Brazil. My goal is to inspire and encourage creativity and individualism through music by establishing a rapport and building trust with my students. I strive to create an enjoyable learning experience for students while incorporating a practical, innovative, step-by-step, hands-on method to learning drums and percussion. My students are encouraged to come together in percussion ensemble performances as well as form bands, rehearse and perform live music. I always welcome new students of all ages.   My teaching credits include: Drum/Percussion Instructor for the Yamaha Popular Music School, Tokyo, Japan, and Latin Percussion Ensemble Instructor for the Kyoto Conservatory of Music, Kyoto, Japan, and Drum/Percussion Instructor for the Antonio Adolfo School of Brazilian Music, Hollywood, Florida.
METHODS USED
I encourage an understanding of music and drum-set/percussion performance by listening/analysis of music and transcription of different rhythms with a practical application to the drums/percussion.  I aim to promote multi-cultural awareness by incorporating traditional rhythms from around the globe into modern-day drum-set and percussion performance. I use a number of different teaching strategies to tailor-make the learning experience for each student. A few of the many books I use are 'Syncopation for the Modern Drummer' by Ted Reed, ‘Stick Control for the Snare Drummer’ by George Stone and ‘Teaching Rhythms’ by Joel Rothman.
LESSON STYLE
It is most important to me to help my students achieve their music goals! Whether you drum as a hobby, an added discipline to your every day routine or you aspire to become a pro, let's work to support your music education by setting goals and moving progressively forward with each lesson. My instruction is 'tailor-made'.

“My son has been instructed by Mark for almost four years. Mark is an outstanding teacher. His credentials are by themselves impressive, but his ability to relate his knowledge to kids is even more so. Connor's ability to understand and read music is fantastic. Mark also knows the performance side of playing drums and has encouraged Connor to actually incorporate his knowledge to play alone and in a band. He is patient and encouraging which is what motivates Connor to work and practice. He is a mentor as well as a teacher. He is superior at what he does and we highly recommend him.” Ro J.

“I took drum lessons from Mark for about 7 months. I have been playing for 38 years but always thrive to learn more. He was able to provide me alternative exercises and help me gain a better understanding of my opportunities. I have been able to take my playing to another level. His approach to teaching is perfect for any level of student, beginner or advanced. He is a true professional and an outstanding person. You won't go wrong with Mark!” Blaine Vaz

"My daughter has been a student with Mark for over a year. She has come so far and has learned so much in such a short time. Mark is extremely talented and knowledgeable. He is very serious, patient and super nice. If your child or if you really WANT to learn the drums, then I highly recommend Mark. He is our third instructor and the best one yet! You will not be disappointed." Michelle S.

"Mark is an Outstanding, Brilliant Musician! Each lesson I have with him I am amazed at his talent on drums. He makes learning fun and he is very patient and understands when a student may need more time for mastering the lesson. I would highly recommend Mark if you are looking for a percussion instructor. His knowledge and experience world wide is incredible. He can teach you any instrument and makes it look so easy. He encourages the student to push themselves so that they can strive to the levels they want to accomplish to enjoy playing music. Best decision I made was hiring Mark as my teacher for the drum kit. Hint for a new student he knows if you practice or not!" Wendy R.
