I am originally from Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama in 2008 with a Bachelors degree in Clarinet Performance. Then I moved to Philadelphia to continue my education. I graduated from Temple University with a Masters degree in Clarinet Performance. As a teacher, I am very motivated and persistent. I want to enhance student's abilities in every way I can and enhance their love for music as well. I want classical music to continue for generations to come.
I began teaching privately in college at Alabama in 2010. I have played with various local and school orchestras, and also wind bands in college. Every week, I assign specific music to play and encourage students to practice every day. I love teaching students of all ages and it keeps me on my toes!
I believe that the first thing you have to have is a good fundamental foundation. I always start with breathing correctly and assembling the instrument before playing notes. The core concepts I teach in the beginning are tone, dexterity, and tonguing. As for specific exercises, no two students are the same. I assign or create exercises based on the specific student's needs as a player.
As a teacher, I know that every student is different and learns differently. So I determine through lessons how each student learns best and set goals that each student can attain weekly. I mark off lines that students pass in their book and give a happy face, or a kind of positive acknowledgement, when he or she passes the whole page. I am very persistent with students and will not breeze over something they really need to know. I love seeing when students understand a concept and their faces light up!
