I began teaching guitar while earning my master’s degree at SUNY Purchase in 2010. I have always enjoyed teaching and found it rewarding to share my love of music. Since then I have added piano, voice and songwriting to the disciplines I teach. The best part of my job is helping my students make musical connections and giving them the tools for lifelong learning. In 2017 I co-founded SSW (SPAA Songwriters), an intensive summer songwriting workshop where kids can write, record and produce their own original tracks.
Everyone is different! Some students will benefit most from a traditional, by the book approach, whereas others will lean more towards the improvisational. There is no singular right way to learn, my job is to find the right way for you. If you like to read sheet music that's great, but if not that doesn't mean that you can't study music. The method is less important than the end goal of enriching your life through music. There are many paths that can take you there, as long as you keep practicing!
Learning an instrument can be a daunting task; I take pride in providing a comfortable and relaxed learning environment in which all students can excel. Our lessons are guided by the interest of the student. If there is a particular song or artist the student likes we will use it as a starting place and build from there. Regular practice is the most important ingredient. I can help show you not only What to practice, but How to practice in order to make progress and get the most enjoyment out of making music.
My 10 year old son is very happy with Mr Lynwood J. He loves him and waits for his next class. We don’t even need to tell him to practice his instrument. Any free time and I can hear him strumming his guitar. Mr Lynwood J. is very professional, always on time, very patient and encouraging. We are very lucky to have found him.
Our kids love Mr. Lynwood. Mr. Lynwood is very patient and skillful teaching our kids both music theory and guitar/piano. He keeps them engaged and motivated during their lessons and we are seeing -or rather hearing- fast improvement in the kids' dexterity playing their respective instruments. We would recommend this good natured instructor to anybody.
