Overview:
I have been involved in the Kansas City music world since I was 5 years old. As a native of Independence, Missouri, I grew up in a rich musical heritage that included choral, orchestral, and gospel genres. As a student, I've studied at Brigham Young University, Central Missouri State University, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, and have participated in a distance research program through The Florida State University. As a composer/arranger, I've written choral literature that spans from SATB to two-part youth choir settings. I have studied under and attended master-classes with Dr. Doug Helvering, Morton Lauridsen, and Stephen Paulus. In 2015, three of my 'Americana' arrangements will be published as a set of variations on American folk tunes by Santa Barbara Publishing Inc. As a singer, I've performed with the BYU Singers, the Grammy nominated Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Vox Luminese Chamber Choir, and have recently recorded media projects with San Francisco based mens ensemble Chanticleer. I have been a chorister and soloist in the Highland Music Festival, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and have participated in concerts in Carnegie Hall, The National Cathedral, Christ-Church Abbey, and London's famed Southwark Cathedral. This year, I was selected to participate in the Tallis Scholar Summer Camp program, under directors Rebekah Gilmore and Peter Phillips. As a conductor, I've worked with Mack Wilberg, Craig Jessop, Ron Staheli, Jo-Michael Scheibe, and Peter Bagley, among others. I have directed the BYU-Idaho Jazz and Symphonic Bands, and am the assistant director the Center Place Singers. I am also the founder and artistic director of Knsas City based chamber ensemble Ancora Chorale. In addition to my conducting duties, I currently hold membership with Spire Symphonic and Chamber Choirs, Te Deum Chamber Choir, and the KC Men's Ensemble, with which I recently performed at the KCDA state convention at Grace Cathedral, in Topeka, Kansas. I am a current member of the American Choral Directors Association, ASCAP, and the Missouri Music Educators Association. I also operate a full voice and piano studio in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, and serve as a board Advisor for the Spire Choir organization.
EXPERIENCE
Since I was a small child, my passion has been for the teaching and creation of music, in all forms. I believe that each of us have the power of music, the universal language, instilled in us from birth. It is my life's work to help bring that power and expression to the forefront in myself and my students, so that they may inspire those around them and be changed for the better themselves.
METHODS USED
Primarily Bel Canto singing technique.
LESSON STYLE
I like to form a give and take relationship with my students - each student is different and approaches cannot be the same by any means. As I build a relationship with a student, we will work together to navigate obstacles by exploring different methods, ultimately empowering them with a toolbag that they can access at any time, depending on the situation.
