2011-2012 - Lead teacher at music store in Westchester County, New York

Overview:

I'm a guitar and piano player who has been teaching students of all ages since 2011.  I started playing guitar 17 years ago and it has been my constant companion since then.  I got my music degree from Carleton College, and my senior project was on jazz guitar arranging.  I have played in bands, both on guitar and bass, for many years and I love performing live.  I have taught most styles of guitar, and also beginner piano and bass guitar.

EXPERIENCE

I began teaching over three years ago, after many years of playing instruments solo and in groups.  I teach in most styles of guitar, and also beginner piano and bass guitar.  I also love teaching music theory and consider it to be an essential part of any music lesson.  I taught extensively for a music store in New York and after returning to Madison recently, I am looking to continue my work as a music teacher.

METHODS USED

I have taught from both the FJH and Berklee series of guitar and theory books.  My lessons revolve around three parts: 1- Lessons from books of the appropriate level.  We choose a book that suits the student, and there are weekly assignments from the book. 2- Theory work, usually focusing on the Blues form.  My teaching of pop, rock, country, folk, etc. all goes back to the blues form.  The music theory work also supports the students growing musical knowledge.  3- The student's choice of music.  This is most important and critical to the student's success.  You as a student must have something that brings you to your instrument on a regular basis.  Choosing your own work will do this better than anything I can assign.

LESSON STYLE

I have found nothing in my professional life more satisfying that developing lasting relationships with my students.  Watching someone grow in their ability to play music, especially music they love, is an experience that is second to none.  I will help you become the musician you long to be, and hopefully point you in some new and exciting directions along the way.  We embark on this journey together, and no matter where we end up it will be a wonderful ride getting there!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
