ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, Miyagi Gakuin University in Japan, Piano Performance. Pitman College in UK, Secretarial Skills Diploma. UCIrvine in USA, TESL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language).

Overview:
I started learning piano when I was 6 years old in my hometown Sendai, Japan. By the time of my graduation from the primary school, my first piano teacher asked me if I am willing to taking piano lessons in order to enter a conservator of music. If so, she would introduce her piano teacher who was a renowned pianist to me. After 3 months of testing period, I could become her student. I practiced piano at least for 3 hours every single day. Although it was very hard time, but I am so thankful to my teacher for giving me incomparable lessons. Without the experience, I could not have taught piano to over 100 students with such high reputation.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching piano as a private teacher in my piano studio right after I graduated from the music college in Japan. After 10 years of teaching experience, I decided to apply for the position of the music teacher in Zambia, Africa. I was sent there as a volunteer member by Japanese government. I taught about 30 students - piano, music theory, keyboard harmony and so on in the vocational college in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, They were going to become the music teachers in the junior and high schools. They were very diligent and had very good manners. It was a wonderful experience of learning a lot of things not only positive aspects but also heartbreaking ones too. It definitely changed my way of viewing the world. Then I went to London, U.K. to learn more English language, in addition, I developed the office skills such as typing, operating electronic devices and how to write business letters so on. I had also wonderful opportunities to experience in the office of London chamber of commerce and industry. After that I came to Irvine, California where I entered UCI in order to learn more languages. However, my love of teaching piano did not change. I have still been enjoying teaching piano and playing piano for myself and playing with my piano quartet regularly here in Northern California.
METHODS USED
For beginners who are young children under 7 years of age, I always start with Bastien Piano Basics Primer A together with the theory book primer A then Primer B (piano and theory). Once the student has progressed to gain fundamentals I introduce Alfred’s Basic piano Library Prep Course with the theory book as well. Some students start from B but most of them start level C depending on their ability. After finishing level 6 they can step up to Alfred’s Basic Piano Library. They start with technic book 3, lesson book 3, recital book 3 until level 4. Since there is no technic book from level 5, I introduce Czerny #100 for their technique practice. I also use Hanon, Brugmullar, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin and many famous composers piano pieces.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is very flexible. I am able to teach classical, as well as many different musical genres. I am able to arrange piano songs to the student's level and write down the scores from the songs. My ultimate purpose of teaching piano is to make my students ENJOY their performances. However, the key factor in improving piano skills is hard practice. Making sure their children keep practicing is always challenging for parents and teachers, but please remember that everyday practice is required if you would like to progress your piano performance.

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation in support of our outstanding piano instructor, Mrs. Junko H. My two children and I have had the pleasure of being her student for over 8 years and can confidently attest to her exceptional skills, dedication, and impact on my musical journey. Mrs. Junko H. possesses a rare combination of technical expertise and a deep passion for music that has made her lessons both enriching and enjoyable. She has a unique ability to tailor instruction to the individual needs and learning style of each student, fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment. An example of this is how she was very patient with me and thought me at a different pace than my children who picked up the lessons faster. One of her greatest strengths is her commitment to teaching not only technical proficiency but also a genuine love for music. Mrs. Junko H. goes beyond the standard curriculum, incorporating a diverse range of musical genres and styles into her teaching. She chooses each book and lesson carefully and selectively. We are truly impressed by the progress we all have made to date. In addition to her technical expertise and unique teaching methods, Mrs. Junko H. is an excellent communicator. She effectively delivers complex musical concepts in a clear and understandable manner, ensuring that her students grasp both the theoretical and practical aspects of their musical education. Even during the Pandemic, Mrs. Junko H. was kind enough to continue lessons for us through zoom without any interruptions or setbacks.
