Overview:
I am a multi-instrumentalist who plays a variety of instruments including drums, piano, bass guitar and guitar. I have been studying drums for the last 18 years. My parents run a music school out of Santa Rosa Beach Florida. I have always been surrounded by music and students.
I have experience as a High School Drumline instructor, a recording musician, a live performer, and a songwriter.
I have competed in FMBC, MPA solo and ensemble competitions, and a local florida Battle of the bands.
EXPERIENCE
My experience in recording studios, playing live performances, and songwriting/composition gives me insight into what is important when a musician is just beginning to pick up an instrument.
There are techniques, but there are also style preferences. I think a mixture of both is important for developing an individual's musicianship.
I believe in encouraging every student to learn the basics as well as a variety of styles.
METHODS USED
For beginners: Focus on muscle development through repetitive warm-ups, beginner songs, metronome practice, and singing along while playing (If you can say it, you can play it)
For Intermediates: Focus on different styles and nuances (volume, speed, accents, and rhythms), learning to play with another instrumentalist will be important, as well as learning and memorizing songs.
*Unique songs and warm-ups will be printed out for students and occasionally students will write out songs and warm-ups on staff paper, so they can learn that skill for the future.
LESSON STYLE
As I have learned, repetition is a large part of success when it comes to learning any musical instrument.
Every lesson will include a portion of warm-ups that will be about the same every time, with the idea that they will become easier every time. The rest of the lesson will depend on what the student is personally interested in learning. For example: drum kit (in various styles), marching snare, concert snare, reading music, sight reading, solo pieces, favorite songs, etc.
