Overview:
I started as a part time instructor in music stores while I was still in college in the 1980's and have worked in various public and private schools as a woodwind specialist for over thirty years. I currently operate my own studio where I specialize in woodwinds, keyboards and music theory. I have been with Musika since 2014 and currently have students that have been studying with me for over two years. My retention rate is high because I continue to play the instruments that I teach and I actively write materials for all of my students.
EXPERIENCE
my experiences as a musician include performing in both classical and jazz groups in every venue imaginable. These performances include recital halls, banquet halls, school auditoriums, night clubs, bars, restaurants, weddings, parties, church ceremonies, community theater and parades. I encourage my students to practice like I practice and to perform as often as they can. I play classical music every day and I like for my students to study a classical piece because it helps them develop technique rapidly.
METHODS USED
I focus on tone production, articulation and phrasing. Sight reading, improvisation and music theory follow next. With clarinet and saxophone students I spend a lot of time on reed selection and care. There are so many misconceptions about reed strength and how it relates to mouthpieces that I could talk about it all day (and usually do). I work on clarinets and saxophones every day and consider myself proficient in identifying problems with instruments and then fixing those problems. I work extensively with pads and springs and I am able to get most instruments to play decently.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is to identify what area a student needs help in and to remediate the problem by creating supplemental materials. Showing students what to practice and how to practice are key elements. My methods are geared to improve tone production, articulation, phrasing and musicality. I strongly recommend that students select classical music to practice. I heavily emphasize the playing of scales and arpeggios. The composers that are the best to study include Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms. I cover music theory extensively. Recognizing chords and scales in music accelerates a students’ ability to sight read and improvise.

John has a thorough grasp of music and is also very adept of sharing/explaining that knowledge during the lessons. You can feel his love of music and his enthusiasm rubs off on you. I thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with John and would recommend him to others as well. Valentine (Trumpet)

John is a great teacher. He has a wide range of knowledge and he has tailored lessons to suit my experience and goals. He's been very patient and generous with his time. Many times he's made a suggestion which resulted a large improvement in my playing. I'm very happy with the progress I've made since starting to study with John.

I have been learning with John for about a year. It is a pleasure to be his student and study music theory and piano with him. John’s teaching methods have helped me make significant progress over our sessions. He has also been generous in providing supplemental material that has helped me to gain an understanding of how to approach complex musical pieces and expand my musical acumen. 5 Stars. Why couldn't the string quartet find their composer? He was Haydn.

My son has been studying trumpet with John for several years and has made great progress. John is patient, flexible, engaging and professional. He clearly explains and demonstrates theory and concepts, and he provides a variety of music and exercises for my son to practice with. Highly recommend.
