ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Certificate of Achievement in Music, Ventura College, Classical Guitar Performance
Overview:
As long as I can remember I have enjoyed all kinds of music, though I never thought about making it myself until I got my first guitar. I must say, it changed my life! Watching my friends jam together in high school motivated me to pick it up and learn some basic songs. At Ventura College I immersed myself in the applied music program, studying all styles and specializing in classical guitar. Since finishing the program I have supported myself as a freelance musician/instructor and I can't think of anything better to dedicate my life to than sharing the music I love so much.
EXPERIENCE
I have been playing guitar publicly since I first picked it up. Gorilla concerts were always a blast! (ambush your unsuspecting audience, play a song, run away, hehehe) While in college I began to tutor music part-time, gradually building up my student base by referrals. Also, I started taking on bigger gigs which gave me the chance to polish my solo performance skills. Over the years I have had the privilege of working with many amazing musicians in various ensembles, further developing my craft. These days I divide my energy between performing throughout the community and teaching guitar lessons full time.
METHODS USED
With my youngest students I like to start note reading early to build a strong foundation. I often use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, or the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method Vol.1 & 2. Depending on the student's playing style, we may use other books or handouts as well. I also teach with guitar tab or tablature, which can be an easier way to start learning songs and riffs. With all my students we will go over chords, melodies, strumming, picking(finger-style or with a flat pick), hand-eye coordination. Together we will construct a progressive lesson plan that fits your individual style of learning and your personal goals.
LESSON STYLE
Learning how to play an instrument can seem overwhelming at times, but it doesn’t have to be! It should be fun and exciting getting to know your guitar. In fact, learning music can be so much fun, sometimes I can't hide my own excitement when a student plays something for the first time! Because every student is different, together we will make a plan that fits your goals and move ahead at your pace. Starting with basic songs and then moving on to more difficult music as skills develop. Sometimes we will play exercises or drills to learn a new technique while always maintaining a relaxed environment.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
