Overview:
I am an energized and animate music professional passionate about enhancing students competence in music performance, compositional craftsmanship, theory and knowledge of music history. I earned a Bachelor of Music degree from New England Conservatory of Music in May 2014. In May 2017 I earned a master of music education degree from Arizona State University. My education has afforded me the opportunity to develop and refine skills beneficial to teaching. These skills include directing, creativity, analyzing, planning, research, writing, performance, composition, and arranging.
EXPERIENCE
During my time at NEC I was a teachers assistant, assistant to the artistic director, and an office assistant. I worked with the NEC Jazz Youth Orchestra to help students develop aural, and sectional skills. During my breaks from school I assisted at several junior highs and high schools in the east valley. My education in Boston demanded management of a vigorous rehearsal schedule, leadership within music organizations, and countless hours of individual practice and rigorous study. I have interned in bands and music classrooms at public school in the east valley.
METHODS USED
I take a personal approach to the students aspirations. The starting point for all students is, "What music do you enjoy?" This gives me a sense of what they are listening to and maybe even what they would like to sound like. I then sculp a curriculum based on the ability of the student and his/her wants and needs. If I am teaching a beginning woodwind player I focus on embouchure and sound production. I have found these two elements extremely important for the future success of students on their instruments.
LESSON STYLE
I focus on the students musical wants first and then their musical needs. In a curriculum for any student I find certain skills to be necessary. Technique, phrasing, dynamics, and the like. I think these are valuable in any students abilities. Yet students who do not have their musical wants fullfilled feel music to be boring and uneventful. Students who want to play certain kinds of music should be given ample chances to do so. Students who want to focus on more compositional elements should do so. I keep the student at the center of my teaching style.
