ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, University of Texas, San Antonio, Music Composition

Overview:

I have been a professional musician for over 20 years playing with various groups including the U.S. Marine Band in Hawaii, and various cruise ships for Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Princess Cruises.  I have also performed with recording artists such as Ben Vereen, Charro, Regis Philbin and the group Kansas, to name a few.  I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and have been teaching music students for about 20 years.

EXPERIENCE

I began my professional career in 1992 when I successfully auditioned for the U.S. Marine Band program.  I served for four years before I began my teaching experience.  Since 1996, I have taught students in private settings in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Lubbock.  I also spent some time teaching in the small public school system in West Texas.  My teaching method includes instrumental technique and psychological aspects of music performance.  Along with teaching proficiency and psychology of music, I introduce practicality and the future of being a successful musician.  My method develops artistic creativity and critical thinking skills that are relevant to the idea of "music and the human experience."  I also encourage applying my teachings in other aspects of life.

METHODS USED

Depending on my analysis of a, diagnostic, first lesson, I would assign a method book that is appropriate to the students needs.  I have worked with many different method books, but the Essential Elements books are valuable because of the audio CD that is included with the books.  The CD allows the student to play along with a recorded instrument which is valuable for beginning students when they practice at home away from the instructor.  I introduce scales early in lessons.  I not only teach traditional scale performance, I teach the mathematical and emotional significance of scales and intervals.  As a student's proficiency progresses, I introduce solo repertoire and encourage recording of solos through Smart Music software.  This becomes a milestone in a student's development, as it rekindles interest through technology and creates excitement about professional musicianship.  As students become increasingly proficient, advanced method books are introduced.

LESSON STYLE

Every student is different, so my teaching approach is rarely identical from student to student.  Technical training progresses as a student develops motivation through his or her practice habits.  I try to encourage practice through journal entry and self-accountability.  I also try to make a student's home practice a little more exciting by setting goals and explaining what will be accomplished through achieving these short-term goals.  Introducing new concepts while perfecting basic technique is how I try to captivate a student's attention and excitement for music.  Although my philosophical teachings are meant to develop critical thinking skills, I apply these teachings to the music lesson and to the student's ongoing reach for a flawless performance.
