Overview:
I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students to share my love of music and knowledge that I have gained from my own teachers. I am originally from Sitka, Alaska, and in 2013 I graduated from Saint Mary's College of California with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. As an orchestral musician, I have performed throughout the United States and Europe in venues such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Lincoln Center, the Berlin Philharmonie, Davies Symphony Hall and the Walt Disney Concert Hall and had the priviledge to play under some of the world's finest conductors, including Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Simon Rattle, Robert Spano, Ludovic Morlot, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. I graduated from Manhattan School of Music in 2016 and studied with Mark Gould, retired Principal Trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera. I recently completed my doctorate in music from the University of Washington, with my dissertation covering the teaching philosophies of Mark Gould, a teacher who has taught many of the leading trumpet players today.
EXPERIENCE
I have fourteen years of teaching experience. I first began teaching in my early years of high school through my school’s music mentor program. Through this program, I had the opportunity to go back to my old elementary school and mentor trumpet students one on one. It was there that I fell in love with teaching because of how rewarding it is to see the next generation of musicians grow and how I can have a direct impact on their growth. In my gap year between my bachelor's and master's degrees, I visited a number of elementary and middle schools and worked with students there. At Manhattan School of Music I was a Teaching Artist for both the Arts-in-Education and Distance Learning Programs and have also taught at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. I currently teach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and have also worked with students at a number of different universities, such as the University of Washington, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle University, Presbyterian College, and in China at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and Tsinghua University.
METHODS USED
For young beginning students, I really like to emphasize the fundamentals using whatever book the student uses for their band class. Once they get a good grasp on the fundamentals, then I start to introduce some solo repertoire appropriate to their skill level. For students who are older, I like to find out what area of the trumpet they want to improve on and structure our lessons to try and improve on those areas, as well as incorporate other fundamentals and solo repertoire. I try to make the lessons as fun as possible and geared towards what the student wants to learn. For those who are older and more mature, I like to embody the teaching style of Mark Gould, which is to teach the student and not a fixed curriculum. I like to tailor my teaching towards what the students are interested in pursuing or improving upon and we work towards achieving those goals.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students develop a passion for the trumpet and music. Therefore, it is very important to me that I make the lessons both fun and productive for the students. I will gear my teaching style to whatever works best for the individual student. If the student wants to be pushed hard then I can do that or if they just want to have fun and play music, I am fine with that too. My goal is to make it as enjoyable for the student as I possibly can while also learning and growing as a musician.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
