Overview:
I discovered my passion for the drums at age 11 and fully emersed myself in the instrument.  For years throughout middle school and high school, I spent all my spare time listening to my favorite bands and drummers, imitating what I heard, teaching myself as best I could.  At age 16, after playing professionally in a band and winning several contests throughout New England and Canada, I decided to study the instrument formally before attending college. In 2001, I joined the ranks at Berklee College of Music in Boston and studied polyrhythms, classical composition, musicology, jazz theory, among many other topics. Since graduating in the top five percent in 2005, I have traveled internationally with original bands, cover bands and cruise ships while teaching privately as much as possible.  I currently have hundreds of live performance dates and studio sessions under my belt and I combine experience with education to teach my students what it means to be a professional musician in todays world.  In October of 2015 I landed the drum chair with the #1 Journey tribute act in the world, DSB.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began at age 18 after being approached to do so.  I taught off and on throughout college and began seeing students regularly once I was working as a professional musician.  Whether in the Boston area or Las Vegas, where I am currently based, I have always had a private drum studio where I meet with students on a weekly basis for private instruction. In Massachussetts, I was the principle drum instructor at a Montessori Elementary School and a drum instructor at a music shop, both for several years.  There is a lot of satisfaction in seeing a young eager drummer come into my studio, wanting to learn whatever they can, aborbing everything I have to teach them.  Watching my students grow, giving them various tools to work with and catering to their interests within music, is extremely rewarding.  I see progress in student I have and I will continue to foster their talents to the best of my ability for as long as I can.  This is my way of giving back to the present and future drumming community.
METHODS USED
My teaching methods vary from student to student. First, I find assessing the students' interests and musical goals paramount to building a lesson plan. Since every student is at a different stage in their musical career, our goals will vary from becoming a full time pro to being a weekend warrior. That said,  I focus on everything from basic hand technique, grips and rudiments to chart reading, transcription and analytical listening. Books I use regularly include: George Stone's STICK CONTROL, Ted Reed's SYNCOPATION, Gary Chester's NEW BREED, Alan Dawson's THE DRUMMERS COMPLETE VOCABULARY, Zoro's R&B COMMANDMENTS ...among many others.
LESSON STYLE
Upon meeting a new student, my first step is to assess where their abilities, experience and interests are.  I may recognize they need extra focus on hand technique, posture or dynamic control, to name a few.  I always inquire if there is something specific the student wants to get out of the lessons, whether it be focusing on a particular style, band or drummer.  If they are open to anything, I begin by giving them a broad overview of styles, history of the instrument, different kinds of drums, etc.  From there, we hone in on technique, reading and transcription.  In addition to the technical aspect of music, which can be intimidating to the beginner (which I can fully relate to!), we do extensive listening, partly for enjoyment, partly for analysis. My goal is for all these things to help the student develop a deep understanding of music, the drumset and its role in many different styles, preparing them for a successful career as a professional musician.
