Overview:
Christian Cruz is a Mexican-American classical musician. As a native of Los Angeles, he grew up surrounded with the rock and hip hop scenes while simultaneously being influenced by the Latin American music of his own heritage. As a young guitarist he played rock in Hollywood venues such as the Whiskey A Go Go and the Roxy.
Christian began his studies as a professional musician at Fullerton College, where he focused on classical guitar and composition. He studied Classical Guitar performance with Dr. Steve Thachuk and Grammy award winners William Kanengiser and John Dearman. He holds a Bachelor's of Music from California State University Northridge and a Master’s of Music from University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.
Christian participated in the second annual Master in Classical Guitar Performance in Seville. The year-long program, led by Seville’s own Paco Bernier, included an ongoing rotation of lessons with Judicael Perroy, Zoran Dukic, Lorenzo Micheli, Paolo Pegoraro and Pablo Marquez. Christian was able to perform in Seville regularly, including the chapel in the Moorish castle, Alcazar of Seville. During this time Christian explored improvisation and became seriously interested in composition. Currently, he is Teaching Associate at Fresno State where he studies composition with Dr. Kenneth Froelich.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching guitar for about 5 years now. I began teaching students that needed extra help for a Beginning Guitar class in my college. I then began teaching my younger brother so that I can get a sense of what it is like to teach children. I now enjoy teaching people of all agesand must say that teaching has helped me grow as a musician.
METHODS USED
I have been using Classical Guitar for Young People by Mathew Hinsley for several years now. This book helps me get the students learning how to play with solid technique, musicianship and excitement from day one. I have also been certified as a Suzuki Guitar instructor as of Summer 2018. I supplement my students repertoire with music by Fernando Sor and Leo Brouwer and occasionally introduce my own music.
LESSON STYLE
I adjust to the students (or students parents) needs. I like to advocate the joy and fun of playing music but I also understand that expecations need to be met.
