Overview:
I'm a passionate and engaging instructor and enjoy sharing my experience and knowledge of music with people. I've been teaching Piano, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet and Electronic Music Production, theory and composition for over 20 years in private and classroom settings. I enjoy engaging my students with interesting, challenging and fun music to learn while also focussing on fundamentals of technique on the instrument.
Since graduating from the New School in New York City in 2004, I've had the pleasure of playing at venues throughout the United States. After moving to the San Francisco Bay area in 2006, I remained active in the music and arts scene, performing at The Great American Music Hall, Slims, The Independent, Boom Boom Room and many other venues in Seattle, New York, Portland, Los Angeles and throughout California.
Since 2003, I've produced nine albums of original music that are available online and in physical form.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching music in 2000 while living in Seattle, WA. I continued my teaching while attending the New School University Jazz & Contemporary Music Program in New York City. My goals in teaching are to inspire and further the student’s interest in their instrument and music, while helping them attain the skills to achieve their goals. I’ve been teaching piano, saxophone, flute, clarinet, theory and composition lessons to children and adults for over fifteen years. As a professional musician and music producer for the last 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to expand my communication and administration skills.
METHODS USED
I’ve been teaching saxophone, flute, clarinet and piano to children, young adults and adults for over 15 years. My private instruction focuses on the fundamentals of playing the instrument correctly and ergonomically while incorporating inspiring and challenging materials. The techniques I focus on are interpreting and performing songs, improvisation, transcribing, composition and memorization. I am able to read and play chord changes on the piano to support my students in soloing on jazz standards and original compositions. I also have been teaching composition and music software for the past several years as well, which can be utilized as practice and compositional aids.
LESSON STYLE
I foster a relaxed and inspiring environment for my students. I'm able to mix fun music with challenging materials and fundamentals helping the student achieve the best. I ask that all my students have a "musical journal" where I can write assignments, make notes about the lessons and what ws good and what needs improvement. This journal also helps the student keep track of their own practice routine and progress on assignments. This is a very helpful tool in showing the student how far they've come.
