Overview:
I have been teaching brass instruments to students of all ages for over fifteen years now and I love it! I am very fortunate to have studied privately with many great teachers with varied teaching styles and philosophies which has helped me become a well-rounded educator.  I have also had the orpportunity to perform with numerous ensembles throughout the United States and around the world. Playing the trumpet and french horn, I have performed in countless ensembles including orchestras, concert bands, jazz ensembles, brass quintets, woodwind quintets, brass bands, marching bands, drum and bugle corps, rock groups, circus bands, and many others.
EXPERIENCE
Teaching and performing music has been at the center of my life since my high school days. I realized I had a talent for teaching music and motivating others to succeed as trumpet section leader and band president in my high school band. Throughout college and later as section leader in the Marine Band in Miramar, CA, I routinely assisted other musicians with their music and always enjoyed doing so.  I formally began teaching private lessons fifteen years ago and love to see the rapid musical growth that can be achieved with focused one-on-one instruction. For the last ten years, I have been a band, orchestra, and choir director at the middle school level in the Long Beach Unified School District.  This experience has helped me to streamline my music teaching process and become a much more efficient teacher in private lessons.
METHODS USED
I always vary my teaching methods to accomodate each of my student's needs.  However, my lesson format stays fundamentally the same.  I always begin with some mouthpiece buzzing, which incorporates ear-training, then move to rhythm exercises, scales and technical studies, method book, and any other music the student is working on at the time. Most beginning students will start out with Book 1 of a standard method book; I recommend the Standard of Excellence series. More advanced students will use varying methods based on their skill level, incuding but not limited to Clark, Stamp, Schlossberg, Arban, Sigmund Hering, and various solo literature.
LESSON STYLE
Through many years of teaching, I have found that being positive is the most effective way to help students succeed. Students should look forward to coming to their music lessons and thoroughly enjoy playing their instrument. I always try to avoid focusing on what a student is doing wrong, but instead point out ways to improve. If a student has the confidence and dedication to succeed, they are more than likely to do just that. I also believe in holding each student accountable for their daily practice and having high expectations for their progress. Former students will often come back to thank me for holding them to such high standards because of the success they have achieved.

So far so good after only a few lessons, Alan works well with my 13-year-old son. I think Alan has an appreciation for all different kinds of musical styles and I like that. His most valuable skill is his focus on the fundamentals (posture, embouchure, rhythm, scales, etc.) and the ability to teach them without it becoming boring and rote.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
