For a beginning player, we would recommend renting a Jupiter, Yamaha, or Selmer saxophone. Sax students will also need to purchase reeds to play on their instrument. For new players a softer reed is more appropriate. The strength of a reed is measured on a scale from 1-4: 1 being the softest, 4 being the hardest. We recommend starting with a Rico brand 1.5 or 2 reed, however, students should meet with their teacher first before buying reeds in bulk.
In-home saxophone lessons are a convenient option for improving your musical skills. In home lessons are virtually the same in every aspect as lessons taught in a studio. You can let Musika know what days and times work best and the teacher will arrange to teach lessons in your home for the same price as in-studio lessons.
Each teacher has his or her own style, but as a new saxophone player you can expect to learn about music theory and note-reading. Other topics covered in a lesson will likely include: instrument care, fingerings for notes and how to develop quick finger action, correct breathing and embouchure formation, and tips for developing a beautiful sound in all registers.
Many of our adult saxophone students are complete beginners, while others are former saxophonists now returning to an old hobby. We also have students who are more advanced and are looking to take their skills in both advanced classical repertoire and/or jazz improvization to the next level. Our teachers have proven methods to get you the results you desire.
The saxophone is a wonderful instrument to begin in elementary or middle school. Young saxophonists are able to progress quickly and many schools have jazz programs that feature sax. Typically, Musika recommends waiting until age 8 before beginning sax lessons.
