My teaching style begins with creating a positive environment for the student to keep them encouraged and wanting to continue their study. I try to keep the students engaged by finding a balance of what the students want to work on, as well as what I want them to be working on. I understand that every student learns differently, and I won't teach every student the same way. I will give the students goals to reach every week, so they can see the progress themselves, and I always ensure to acknowledge when a student has succeeded with something that was assigned to them. My methods vary greatly depending on the student's goals and experience. Through the first few years of study, an emphasis on the fundamentals of music and instrumental skills is required. This typically takes the form of a beginning method book. For students beyond this phase of study, advanced technique work takes the form of scale, chord, and interval studies. I couple these with the development of repertoire that fits the needs and goals of that student. Read More

As a performer, I have appeared as soloist and as a member or small and large chamber ensembles at venues such as Shermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, the Kimmel Center, the Fenway Center in Boston, Tenri Cultural Institute and SPECTRUM NYC. I enjoy working with living composers and have played for people such as Jennifer Higdon, Michael Djupstrom, Matthew Greenbaum, Raoul Pleskow, William Bolcom, etc. I am committed to the presentation of new music because I feel as if it is just as important as the classical canon and more relevent than any other time to the world we live in today. I structure my lessons in the same way I structure my own personal practice. I usually start off with a few technical exercises, then cover some theory, and then work on repertoire. How much time goes in to each category will depend on the student. A beginner tends to need more time on technique, whereas someone who has an audition or recital coming up will spend most of their time on repertoire. Read More

After learning the guitar and piano, I went on to several other instruments learning the theory and dedication needed to excel. While doing so, I was able to utilize the music theory in an understanding to be able to apply those theory principals to the instrument for better artistry. For example, by learning scales and how to alter the scales for various style, I was able to play different genres, such as Rock, blues, country etc. Read More
