More Information About Piano Lessons

We recommend that students get either a full size piano, or an 88-key, weighted hammer action keyboard for their lessons and practice. A real acoustic piano will provide the most satisfying learning experience, however, due to the costs and size of the instrument, a keyboard is often the more convenient option. Weighted keys will respond most like those of an acoustic piano, and keyboards have the added bonus of being portable and compatible with headphones. The most popular brands of keyboard or digital piano are Yamaha, Casio, Korg and Roland.
Music lessons in your home offer a convenient option to learning music! Most of our students request in home lessons for this reason. As long as you have a piano or keyboard in your home, then you should be all set to start your lessons! Children who have never played an instrument before may feel more comfortable studying in their own home, as it may be less intimidating than going somewhere else. In home lessons decrease the time and gas money spent traveling to a different location.
Whether you have an interest in learning to play Rock, Jazz, Romantic or Classical piano, our piano teachers can help develop your playing through one-on-one lessons. Our teachers can also prepare you for exams, recitals and performances. For beginners, the basics will be taught. This will include learning the correct posture, hand position and fingering technique. It will include learning the notes and scales of the piano, learning basic chords and chord progressions, developing the musical ear and learning to apply these things to simple songs. Intermediate players will work on more exotic chords and playing such as diminished chords, 7th chords and applying these things to more challenging compositions. All students can develop their sight reading, ability to interpret sheet music and chord charts. Advanced students can study a particular composer o genre, can develop their repertoire, or work on their improvisational skills.
Many older students are fulfilling a long standing ambition by taking piano lessons. Some students may have had lessons when they were younger and want to re-learn and others are simply looking for a new hobby. Whatever the aim or reason, there are many benefits to piano lessons for older students. Learning the piano can keep you mentally active, help maintain dexterity, improve your hearing and stimulate the brain in a creative way. Older students can develop basic technique and music theory quite quickly, as their concentration, thinking skills and self-discipline are more advanced than that of children.
Children are recommended to start piano lessons no earlier than age 4 or 5. The attention span and personality of the child are something to consider when thinking of taking lessons. Even if your child has no evident musical inclinations, piano lessons offer a great option for introducing your child to music. During their lessons children will learn how to read music, fundamentals of musicianship and sight reading, music theory techniques, and ear training.
