By age eighteen, I won the Music Teacher's National Association's Solo Piano Competition for the State of Florida, First Prize in the Florida State Music Teachers Association's Gold Cup Concerto Competition, and Second Prize in the Harold C. Schwartz Foundation Scholarship Competition. Presently, while pursuing my doctorate at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, I have built a substantial presence in the competitive field; the previous seasons have been immensely successful, having earned gold medal and first prize in the 68th Wideman International Piano Concerto Competition, as well as first prize at the National finals of the Music Teachers National Association's Young Artist Competition, sponsored by Steinway and Sons. I started teaching lessons when I was 18 at a music business and taught there between 3 to 5 hours a week for about 5 years. For the past 5 years I have been teaching at IU. I have taught many different styles from classical to jazz to rock, etc. and have also watched many great teachers and tried to learn from their methods. I like to begin all my students on a combination of technical studies and enjoyable/familiar melodies. This will help them learn the fundamentals in a rewarding way, because as they progress they will continue to learn new songs week after week. This is much more rewarding than checking of series of technical exercises. There are several different method books that I like to use with my students based on age, knowledge/experience, and of course if the method book they use is something they will enjoy; it's very difficult if a student doesn't like the book they're using so I try to give them options. For beginners, I like to use John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course or the Schuam method books. For additional practice and work, I like to use Schaum's Fingerpower and have the student write out the notes then recite them aloud while playing the exercise. Read More
