I have played piano since the age of eight and grew up accompanying various choirs, playing in church, and performing in contests. I used other activities such as walking, running, dancing, and boxing to demonstrate performance techniques and to make students understand the importance of natural gesture, inertia, and relaxation. I provided students with a "Good Sound" repertoire that spanned different levels of difficulty and incorporated folk, popular, jazz, and traditional classical music to match their needs and interests. We begin to work on the voice that way, and then graduate to vocal exercises from the Vaccai exercise book and simple vocal pieces such as folk songs or one of the 24 Italian Arias. As students advance, or if they come to me at an advanced stage already, we move on to more difficult art songs or arias from operas, or branch out into the student's desired repertoire if they do not wish to study classical voice specifically. I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. I still mainly focus on the percussion section every year, but my responsibilities have spread to assisting with other sections of the band as well. Read More

For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument. In college I began teaching drumlines over the summer for various high school programs. During that time is when I really began to fall in love with the teaching process and watching my students improve and grow as musicians. Shortly after I also began doing private guitar, rudimental percussion, and drum set lessons. I believe I really resonate with my students because although I got such a late start into music, through practice and hard work I was still able to be the musician I wanted to be. Read More
