Most students start out with a keyboard or digital piano. We recommend a full size keyboard with 88 weighted keys - weighted keyboards will have a touch response similar to a real piano. However, if purchasing a real piano is in your budget, we think that a real acoustic piano will provide you and the student with the highest level of satisfaction during practice time.
Musika offers piano lessons in the comfort of your home. Provided you have a piano or keyboard to practice, you have everything needed to start learning straight from home! Taking lessons in the home is a great way to save time and money travelling to your piano lessons. There is no difference in the content of the lessons, whether they take place at home or in the studio. Home piano lessons are a particularly good option for younger students. It is a big advance for young students to learn in a familiar, comfortable and supportive environment.
All students start their lessons at different levels of experience and with different aims and goals in mind. For beginner students who are new to the piano, lessons will be devised to give students the fundamentals of good piano playing. Students will learn the correct posture, hand position and fingering techniques for playing scales and chords. Students can develop these skills through practising scales, arpeggios and simple melodies using both hands. For advanced students, they will cover more intricate skills, such as creating runs and fills to add interest and variation to their playing, to develop their repertoire of pieces they can play and to develop their sight reading. Some students may have a specific genre that they are interested in learning, such as jazz piano. Students will learn the musical theory and techniques that underly a host of musical genres. Musika teachers are able to recommend books or specific areas of additional study that they feel will advance each individual student and help to achieve their goals.
Learning a new musical skill as an adult is a great way to keep your brain fresh! We have many adult students actively taking lessons with us, and this actually represents around 50% of our student base. Our instructors will offer an individually tailored lesson plan to the needs of an adult student. You will learn the technique of the instrument, specific repetoire suited to your skill level, and learn how to read music and sight read.
Piano is a great first instrument for children who have never studied music before. Our instructors specialize in teaching younger children, and will develop an individual lesson plan for your child. The youngest age that we recommend starting piano lessons is age 4. The instructor will be able to teach your child to read music, beginning music theory and musician skills, and how to develop a love for playing the instrument.
