Lou M

Instruments:

I started playing at about the age of three. My father was a drummer who played semi-professionally part time. I would accompany him to rehearsals and gigs. I would occasionally sub for him starting at the age of six or seven. He also coached the school band that I played in. Once out of high school, I studied with Henry Adler, who authored Buddy Rich's snare drum book, and then jazz and big band drummer Sonny Igoe. Although I was already gigging, I was very much interested in Big band, Jazz, and Fusion and wanted to sharpen my skills in reading charts and improvisation. I could not have asked for a better teacher than Sonny, who I consider my mentor. During these years of study I was gigging and recording with everyone I could. I studied music theory, guitar, and piano with several of the fine musicians I met along the way. Since then my on the job training has spread across all styles of music; rock, blues, jazz, fusion, theater, and playing with a number of big bands, including several years of touring. I also ran my own band for several years, as well as writing and arranging for other artists.

More Information About Piano Lessons

An upright or grand piano is often too expensive or large for the home. For lessons and practice, keyboards are a great alternative. Many keyboards can be powered via battery, making them portable, and can also be played with headphones which makes late night practice possible. Many keyboards also have built-in lessons that students can play along to, as well as having many sounds available, such as stringed sounds; violin, cello, viola, horn sounds and percussive sounds. This makes keyboards more diverse than a piano, and a fun alternative for practising on. Many keyboards are also compatible with home computers, which is great for uploading recordings.
In home lessons are what 90% of our students request. Not only does this provide a convenient means to study music, but we also notice no difference in the quality of lessons done in home or in studio. They are typically structured the same. The main benefit of in-home lessons is the reduction in travel time to another location, and additionaly the student may be able to focus better in your own home since they are familiar with it. Piano lessons in the home offer a practical choice for your family for learning the skill of playing a musical instrument.
There are several different, but vey important elements to becoming a good piano player. It takes time to master the basic skills that will set you on your way to excellence. For beginners, the lessons will focus on elementary piano knowledge and technique, such as learning all the notes of the piano, hand and finger techniques for playing, learning scales and chords, as well as some music theory; reading sheet music, chord charts etc... These basic skills can then be applied to simple songs. Students with these foundations in place can expect to cover things like, diminished chords and other chord types, sight reading, playing more challenging compositions and learning the 7 piano modes - Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian mode. Lessons for advanced students might cover topics such as improvisation, glissando, or the study of a specific genre of playing or composer, such as Jazz piano or Johann Sebastian Bach.
Taking piano lessons as an adult is a great way to learn a new skill and have fun at the same time. Our instructors can help you learn from the very basic level if you are a beginner, or if you are an advanced player they can help you refine your skills. Adult lessons will focus on learning the technique of the instrument, including how to read music, chords, and learning repertoire
Piano lessons for children will focus on learning the fundamentals of the technique of the instrument and learning to read music and rhythm. We suggest beginning piano lessons no earlier than age 4, due to the attention span of the child, as well as the strength they have in their hands for playing. Piano Lessons will offer an excellent introduction to learning music for a child. Music theory and musicianship skills will also be taught during the lessons. Piano lessons are a great choice for introducing the art of music to your child!
