Personally and as a "Music Teacher" I believe, the intricacies of musical expression are not so complex as to when an intimate relationship is entered into by the aspiring artist and his/her dreams of music. For then, a marvelous world in which the artist lives, sings, plays and paints his/her music in, presents itself as a limitless wonder. Born in South Bend Indiana at the age of eight I became very interested in music used in our lively church services. One day, while curiously fidgeting around with the piano, I figured out how to play a nice rhythmic tune including the changes needed to play and sing along with it. Finally, culminating the tune to a nice resolve pleasant to the ear, I was very excited. While playing this tune in church before service, one of the Deacons exclaimed, "Hey stop playing that "Boogey Woogey" in here." I was barely nine at the time and it was a few years later that I realized I had by ear figured out the I, IV and V (V7) chords to the "Blues" and "Boogey Woogey." This began my musical journey into a world of beauty and expression that has lasted me a life time. The many different sounds that each instrument produces, as well as the most natural instrument the voice, were stunningly amazing to me. The "love affair" continues. Growing up in an environment where gospel music was the music of choice by adults, my growth and exposure to other styles was fueled solely by my curiosity. Starting out with only the instruments available to me in church, in third grade I was presented with the Tonette.  Progressing to the Trumpet, I was exposed to written music and was taught to read. I have performed in theatres, orchestras, marching bands, jazz bands, tent revivals, bars and lounges. During this time, I developed my own personal style of singing, playing and performing. At fifteen, I discovered the guitar. "Wow!" Now here was an instrument I could play and sing with at the same time.  After hearing that guitar line on "Stevie Wonder's" "Very Superstitious" (1973)... I had to play that instrument.  Self-taught with a great ear, I soaked up everything I could from recordings and other musicians.  I played in Blues, gospel, country, soul and rock bands.  I just played everywhere with everyone I could. At 17, I started teaching my family and friends how to play different instruments. I had entered the realm of becoming a teacher. I recorded my first album at 18 with a Gospel group called the "Children of Truth" started by Fred Huff (vocalist/drummer) and I.   As a group we performed on a local morning Television show, outside venues, churches and prisons.  The album was a milestone for me. It brought it all into perspective. I was hooked on music! After 15 exciting years of touring with different groups I gained experience and knowledge, both good and bad about the "Music Industry." Experiences like writing and composing two top 20 hit songs, which my name is not associated with.  Experiences like these are enough to ruin anyone’s aspirations.  To trust or to copyright should never be the question!  Copyright!  The "school of hard knocks" i.e., the streets lends itself to experiences, so valuable, though they try, they cannot teach them in class rooms.  They can lecture about it, but that's not experiencing it.  I wouldn't trade my experiences for a record deal.  Why?  Without understanding sustainability is lost. The love of music is my motivation and satisfaction in life.

Music lessons have been shown to approve students academics, resulting in higher test scores in math, science, and improved language skills.
Musika offers and annual performance opportunity for all students through our spring recitals in May/June. Recitals are a great chance for young students to perform for the first time, more experienced students to show their skills, and even for adults to show their love of music!
