I started teaching friends from middle school who had no music background at all. I found out it was cool explaining what I knew and it was not only helpful for them to learn but also for me. I kept attending lessons until I moved out to study College in L.A. While I was attending college, I kept meeting with people to study and explain some topics , classes, and techniques. Read More

I love seeing my students become as passionate about music as I am! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. It's important for each student to have just the right amount of material to work on each week, so that they are progressing without feeling overwhelmed. I also make sure to acknowledge the work that might students put in, and encourage them to feel proud of what they accomplish. Read More

My first emphasis is that you have to like what you're playing. I really try to focus on what music gets the student excited. For some of them, it comes quickly. Others it might take a while, and that is okay. Once I find the switch that engages the student's interest, that is my focus. I really emphasize getting students to read music and also understand the key components of music theory, so that they understand what it is they are playing. Read More

My teaching style is not in a box. I would need to get to know the student, understand the goal of the student, understand the learning process of the student. I do have structure depending on the level of the student but there is much room for customization as not every student is the same, neither does everyone think the same. It is my goal to reach who you are as a person so I can better assist you on your path in music. Read More

Its a great jumping off point to work on finger placement, rhythm and picking; all the while we get to learn a song, too! My intermediate students have focus heavily on musicianship. With these types of students I often play (or jam) with them during lessons. This gives them the chance to start really listening and to use their skills to function as a musician. I find students who miss out on this can often play lots of songs but sometimes are missing solid rhythm and finger placement work. Read More

I find that the most effective method with beginners is to color code things in a way that makes sense. I have stickers for this and a chart of what each means. Music is similar to math, and once the student can make proper associations in their head when looking at music or playing an instrument, the rest becomes easier. I typically will have them give me a song they want to learn and make it my goal to teach it to them by the end of the first six months. Read More

I have been a teacher for the last 7 years: having worked at after-school programs, I have learned how to understand the psychology involved in teaching and how to get students motivated but sparkling their curiosity based on their personal experiences. I encourage students to practice on a consistent basis for as much time as they can, but most importantly, I encourage them to listen. The art of listening is much understated in music education at times and is really what made a difference in my playing, so I like to include listening exercises that go along with technique in order for the student to develop a well-crafted musicianship. ...of pitching to potential bandmates will need to be a lot different if you’re planning on forming something like a professional cover band. If you’re looking to form a professional band, you’ll need to lay out expectations about money and payment along with your pitch.   Tip #3: Use every resource you can to connect with local musicians   In 2017, there’s never been more ways to get ... Types of Ukuleles

...it great for children and folks with smaller hands. Its small size also gives it a light, springy kind of sound that can’t be replicated with other sizes of ukuleles. Be aware though that there are many novelty and poorly made ukuleles in this size, since construction costs are so low. However, with a bit of browsing you will be able to find a well-constructed soprano uke.   Concert Ukulele As the name suggests, this size is popular among performing ukulele players. It’s slightly larger than the soprano so it’s easier to navigate the fret-board for those with larger hands. The notes also have a bit more of a round ... Read More

Suzuki Performance: An Approach to Playing for an Audience

...working in sync, you name it – but there should be a purpose to the activities that are done in class.   Peer Group Performances During a group class, students may be called upon to demonstrate skills or techniques. Sometimes this happens in small groups – say the class is divided in half and the two sides try to ‘play that tune’ as the teacher calls out the name of a Suzuki piece. Or maybe, the students play centipede style – the kid first in line does the first two notes of Perpetual Motion (a favorite Book 1 piece), the next one plays the ... Read More
