For all my students, including vocalists, I always try to keep things enjoyable with mixed repertoire assignments. Even at beginner levels, I've seen some of my students cover the songs thattheywant to learn. I didn't learn to sing and play the piano by being forced to play songs I didn't enjoy as a listener. The key is finding music that is both challengingto create andfun as heck to perform. Specifically as a vocal teacher and overall vocal performance enthusiast, I rely on contemporary ear training as the key method to my teaching style. Read More

When I am one on one with a student I feel that it is good practice to tailor my lesson plan around the student and their skill set. If my student were to tell me that they want to work on something specific or would like to learn a song that they are into then that is what I will focus on. The most important part of guitar lessons is to have fun and be in the moment. Read More

Everyone loves music, its why we listen to it on the way to work, when we relax or just for the fun of it. Getting to explore the amazing world of music is a gift and I believe learning an instrument should be fun and stimulating just as music is. Secondly the lessons should be challenging without being overwhelming. It feels good to accomplish something that is difficult and that feeling of accomplishment is one of the major motivations behind learning an instrument. Read More

The way i approach sharing knowledge with students is to present materials and concepts and then set about "right-sizing" the tasks based on each student's individual needs. Anything we want to play can be broken down into its component parts and we work to gain mastery of each element. It doesn't matter how small we make the task if we are progressing! Something may seem difficult, but we find the right way of working on it and we're off and running. Read More

Utilizing the philosophy of experiential education, I encourage my students to explore music through their own personal experiences. Understanding the experience we have with music in our everyday lives, allows us to personally connect with the music and sounds that speak to us, while aslo nurturing creativity and curiousity within our instrument. My purpose is to not only teach the technical aspects of the instrument but also develop a deeper and more personal connection to music. Read More

I think being well rounded is important with music and one thing that I've noticed is building on what the student is interested in. Started off with materials builds important fundamentals, but if my student is nodding off to sleep, then I'm not doing my job. I'll begin by setting a goal and seeing what the student is interested in (i.e. what band/song would they like to learn about?) From there, I'll set a realistic goal (Flight of the Bumblebee can't and shouldn't be the first song on guitar that you learn) and we'll learn the techniques, structure, and music theory that exists in a certain song. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
