Before you buy a guitar, it might be a good idea to get the advice of a teacher, or a friend or relative who already plays guitar. Their experience about local reputable music stores may be invaluable and save you a lot of time. The first options are whether to buy a new or used instrument, and whether you want to buy an acoustic or electric guitar. Student models for each can usually be purchased for around $150-200. Used instruments do not always cost less, as some instruments retain their value; notably higher quality American made guitars like Fender or Gibson.
Musika offers one-on-one, in-home guitar lessons that are designed specifically for each individual student. Whether your lesson takes place in the studio or at home, students will get the exact same lesson content, with the only difference being the location. Parents will find home guitar lessons a much more convenient option for their child, as it saves the time and costs of transporting their children to and from the studio. Younger students will find that learning to play the guitar in the comfort of their own homes greatly benefits their development as they are learning in a supportive, secure and familiar environment.
Our guitar students will learn how to hold, tune, and familiarize themselves with the components and notes of the guitar, basic playing techniques such as fretting, fingering and strumming, and learning the various chord-types that they will need in order to play their favourite songs, such as power chords, open chords and barre chords. Students will also get to learn music theory, and will cover such aspects as; reading music, learning different scales, and how to apply these different elements together as part of a full composition. Students will learn the theory and techniques that underlie a wide range of musical genres, and will have fun developing their guitar playing during their lessons. Eventually, students will get to enjoy learning and playing along to their favorite songs!
We recommend that students looking to start guitar lessons have a clear goal in mind - such as learning to play a few of their favorite songs. When you start lessons, a teacher will help you unlock the skills required to reach your goals. Keep in mind that you might not be able to start off with the exact song you want to learn - it could take months of study and practice to learn all of the notes and chords required to turn your dream into a reality.
Students aged as young as 6 years old are able to start taking guitar lessons with our expert teachers here at Musika. At this age, students will find it easiest to play a half-sized classical guitar with nylon strings, and will learn how to play the top strings of the guitar and simple melodies. As they advance, they will start to form a range of different chords and learn to play more challenging songs. Usually by the age of 10-12 years old, students are capable of playing a full sized guitar and want to progress onto the electric guitar.
