Young students should start on a half size or three-quarter size acoustic guitar. Older students could start on an electric guitar, as long as they are able to hold it comfortably. Many student model guitars can be purchased for $150 to $200 new. An electric guitarist will need an amplifier and cables, at additional cost. Remember, higher quality instruments are easier to play and give the student the best chance of liking it.

Beginners will work on core skills such as fretting notes, strumming chords, and playing simple songs on one or more strings. Once students know the basic open chords, they can begin to play their favorite songs! Teachers will cover sight reading and music theory, and can even teach students how to compose their own songs. More advanced topics might include jazz or blue improvization, guitar soloing, or classical guitar repertoire.

The earliest recommended age that students can start their guitar lessons is 6 years old. At this age, students will find it easiest to play a half-sized classical guitar with nylon strings, and will learn how to play simple melodies on the top strings of the guitar. Students can begin to form chords, as well as play and sing along to songs by about ages 7 to 8. When students get to the ages 10-12, they should be able to comfortably handle a full-sized guitar. At this point, they may acquire a taste for rock music and want to progress to the electric guitar.
