All beginner students start with an Essential Elements series of books to help them understand the process of actually playing their instrument. I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. Phase 6: Fingerpicking and Tapping Here we will explore the technique of fingerpicking. The student will use all the fingers on their right hand to the fullest extent and be able to play lovely music of many genres. We will also explore Finger Tapping, a style which uses both hands on the fretboard. This will help with electrifying solos as well as interesting acoustic solo pieces. Phase 7: Advanced Soloing and Improvisation At this point we have a masterful guitar player and are getting them ready for their big debut at Madison Square Garden :) In this phase we will expand the riffs we have learned into full length solos.
