Instruments:

I am a motivated teacher in my community who loves working with students of all ages. I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Therapy, with flute as my principal instrument. I specialize in teaching flute for beginning and intermediate players, and functional piano, guitar, and voice for beginners. I also specialize in teaching students with various disabilities. I teach in students' homes or at my studio on Thursdays. My studio is located in The Breathing Room, a performing arts and healing center in Winston Salem.

More Information About Flute Lessons

"While flutes are relatively inexpensive compared to the other woodwinds, Musika suggests renting an instrument for beginng players. As the player becomes more advanced the student can consider purchasing a more advanced model with open-hole keys and a B foot joint. Armstrong and Gemeinhardt are fine for beginners, and Yamaha is great for beginning/intermediate level flutists. For young players who are smaller in size, the student can consider using a curved headjoint (called a ""candy cane"" headjoint) to facilitate playing."
What is unique about a program like Musika, is that we offer in-home lessons for no additional cost. This allows the student to save the time and money that would normally be spent traveling to a studio.
Flute lessons will be tailored to the specific goals of the student. Every student will be introduced to music theory and the process of reading music. New flutists will learn how to hold, assemble, and clean the instrument, how to correctly blow into the instrument, articulation and fingering, and how to have fun playing the flute!
Many of our adult flute students are complete beginners, while others are former flutists now returning to an old hobby. We also have students who are more advanced and are looking to take their skills in both advanced classical repertoire and/or jazz improvization to the next level. Our teachers have proven methods to get you the results you desire.
Our recommended age for beginning flute lessons is age 8. Most school music programs begin introducing the woodwind instruments in 4th grade. If a young student is eager to begin flute lessons early, consider recorder lessons. The fingering on the recorder is the same as the flute, but the instrument is much easier to hold and produce a sound.
