I encompass his lesson plan into my own as much as possible because it was his teachings that got me to where I am today. I find with my students that a healthy balance of practicing fundamentals and practicing pieces of music that they are very passionate about produces a great deal of inspiration and fuels their creative process. I encourage my students to enter competitions and recitals, as well as compose their own material. Read More

I began teaching music at the age of 15, primarily guitar and piano lessons for beginners ages 7-14 in my hometown of Parker, CO. At 16 I began teaching my students basic music theory and intermediate instrumental instruction. I moved to Boston in 2012 to pursue an undergraduate degree in Songwriting from Berklee College of Music in Boston, still actively teaching throughout my curriculum. I have now taught over 200 students ages 4 to 64 a wide variety of music-related subjects, including: piano, guitar, bass, voice, music theory, D.A.W. and notation software, and contemporary songwriting. The students interests guide what I teach. All students are taught the importance of playing in time and listening to the other band members. All are instructed in having an attitude of service toward their current or future band mates. Bass players and guitar players will be taught theory. I have created a progressive test which will tell me how much Music Theory knowledge they have and serves as a guide to deepen that knowledge. Read More

I attribute development of my teaching method to having started as young as I did; it is my firm belief that students and teachers should learn together, and that, especially with younger students, that it should be fun, engaging, and even a little bit silly at times. I both encourage and require regular practice on a consistent schedule; practicing not only helps students further their progress, but it helps them to avoid burnout by maintaining a view of music as less of a chore and more of a fun activity. For beginners I press through Hal Leonard's Guitar Method #1, laying a foundation of skills as well as approaching notation reading on the guitar. From there we begin to specialize based on the student's interest. For more advanced students, we'll focus on goals such as live performances, audition preparation, and repertoire. Read More

I began teaching students in college, and have consistently taught students of all ages and experience levels. I love being able to help new students along their path to becoming the musician they want to be. I focus my lessons on the students musical interests and apply music theory and proper technique instruction to help them reach their goals. As someone who loves learning themselves, I also love passing knowledge on to new students and instilling a love of learning that will take them to the level of musicianship that they want to achieve. As discussed in "My Methods" I value our time together and want each student to get the most out of each lesson. I work with students to help them learn what they want to. Teaching to me is not a "one size fits all" deal. Different people have different desires and levels they want to get to musically. Some people want to learn music theory and the "why" behind music.
